Liverpool have sought to deny accusations that Steven Gerrard made a two fingered gesture to referee Andre Marriner during Monday night's defeat to Wigan Athletic.

The club captain appeared to offer a "V sign" to the official after receiving a booking late in a frustrating game.

When asked about the about the matter Rafael Benitez who was on the opposite side of the field said: "I don’t know, I was too far away."

An Anfield spokesman suggested that there was no offence within any gesture made.

However, the photographic evidence and suggestions that an obscenity was also mouthed could lead to an FA investigation.

Marriner could have sent the 29 year old off had he heard or seen any disrespectful aimed towards him. Reports from the officials will determine any further action taken.
